The Little Boy and the Old Man

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.
-Shel Silverstein

Yesterday afternoon while Haley was getting ready to go to the movies with friends...

Me: Noticing a yellow thermal tee on her bed. Oh,that's cute. Are you wearing that with tee over it?

Haley: confused?. Ummm. No.

Me: Oh, I thought I seen people wearing the layers like that.

Haley: Not this generation, Mom.

Me: Thinking later... did she really just say not this generation?

Last night in the grocery store after a few minutes of chat with a cute elderly couple...

Haley: You always have conversations in stores with old people.

Me: Mmm-hmmm. I like old people. (Honestly, I'm like an old people beacon, they seek me out to chit-chat.)

Haley: laughing. Did you hear him say, 'buggy?' It's a cart.

Oh how large the generation gap grows...

... or is it just me growing older?

  1. Love Shel and that poem.

I hope I can keep up with them but I'll probably be in the same boat when my kids are teens. Just waiting for those eye roll days.

  3. That is my favorite Shel Silverstein poem. Very true.

It is so hard getting old. I do not anticipate it.

I think it's great you giving time to the elderly. That might of been the only converstion they had had that day with another adult. You never know how little can do SO much!

  4. I'd not heard that poem before but I rather like it. :)

I'm sorry but I'm with Haley on this one. My husband (who happens to be younger than me) sometimes refers to carts as buggies. Drives. Me. Crazy.
